Labels Part II: Breaking Free

Michele Oleary

John 8:36, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Do you ever feel like a neon sign flashing “dysfunction” because of the labels others or you yourself have placed on you?  Your thoughts repeatedly flash the words: bad, stupid, ugly and unwanted. Even as a grown woman.

Labels destroy the best of who we are. Labels shrink our hearts. Labels shred our soul until it is like confetti. Labels become unbearable and oppressive. Labels are heavy and isolating. Labels can take a branding iron and permanently burn wounds deep within us.

Here are a few agonizing, hurtful and cruel labels that covered me like a "worn-out blanket" for many years…

·      Not pretty enough

·      Not skinny enough

·      Not smart enough

·      Not busy enough

·      Not Christian enough

·      Awful mom

·      Awful wife

·      What do you have to offer?

·      What is your purpose?

Can you relate to the destruction and dysfunction of labels? Are you a wayward soul? Do you feel abandoned at times because of labels?

In John 4, a Samaritan woman knows too well about feeling unwanted. She was seeking security in the wrong place and with the wrong people. Her life choices were scandalous.

Jesus had been traveling; He needed to quench His thirst.  As He walked up to a well, there was a lone Samaritan woman gathering water in the sixth hour. Why was she collecting water in the heat of the day by herself? Normally, water was collected in the morning and evening, in the coolness of the day. I imagine the hurtful labels of others caused her to feel isolated and not worthy. She was not welcomed. The nasty whispers, stares, and glares caused her to become a castaway. The bondage of labels crippled her to loneliness.

Jesus knew her story, her sins, and her labels. He didn’t care about the whispers and stares. He cared about the condition of her heart. He walked her to the cup of the Living Water. He quenched her thirst forever. He set her free with His love. He covered her crimson sin with His cleansing blood. Jesus liberated her from loathsome labels.

He broke her free.

Breaking Free:

Will you allow Christ to break you free? Free from yourself. Free from others.

Do you want to let go of the awful falsehoods and slavery from the Deceiver? He wants nothing more than to crush the beautiful God’s Girl that you are.

Join Jesus at the Living Water to be set free from the harness and heaviness of the Deceiver’s labels. Remember, you are not alone…broken and burdened. Many of God’s Girls have been in the footprints of weary, unwanted labels. They found their peace in the Peacemaker.

The time has come to stand united; to break the shackles and oppression of labels. The Living Water of Jesus sets us free! Labels will no longer have authority over our thoughts and bring us to our knees.

Jesus’ blood pours over us.

We are protected.

We are cherished.

We are precious.

In Him, we are beloved and beautiful.

In Him we are free.

Galatians 5:1 “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.”

John 8:36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Believe, break-free and you will be free indeed!
