God's Growth Challenge
There was a buzz and chatter in the gym. It was the last day of the school year for my grandgirlies. A sea of parents, grandparents and friends sat in anticipation to see each grade level perform. With tear-filled eyes and a heart swelling with pride, I watched my grandgirlies sing a song to the 5th grade graduating class. Graduating from one chapter and moving up to their next chapter in the Upper School! So exciting!
As I listened, a knot formed in my throat. I was thinking about each of these precious children, moving forward in life. As the thought of this sat on my heart, God reminded me that to gain or move into the next level is not just for school age kids, but also for me as a Christian. He asked me, “Michele, how are you growing in Me?” Ouch.
As I sat to reflect on this question, I was reminded that the Holy Spirit has been tapping on my heart to memorize scripture. I have to admit, this has not been a very important area of my Christian walk. However, it seems that several of my devotions lately have been on how important it is to memorize God’s Word. It is as if these devotions were flashing at me, like neon lights in Times Square, to make that most important move to memorize, study, glean and grow. Knowing and calling out scripture helps us when we need support, comfort, and for battling the Liar. It also strengthens our prayer life; there is such power in His Word.
I know all these things are true, now I just need to start that next chapter of work. God has asked me to start memorizing a new verse each week. Maybe I am not alone in this area of Christian growth. That thought prompted me to post a weekly Bible verse on the blog. I thought maybe you would like to join me. I would love the company!
July 8th Memory Verse:
Psalm 119:11 (NIV), “I have stored up your words in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
